Abandoned Amusement Park

Abandoned for only two years, this amusement park in northern Europe is only but a shadow of its former self.

In 2010, a promising new investor took over. The old one had closed the park after accidents in the years 2001, 2003 and 2008.
Under new ownership, the park suffered under bad weather and dwindling visitor numbers, so the insolvency proceedings started in 2012.

The park was sold in a foreclosure auction.
The Polish buyer was supposed to ensure a controlled demolition of the park, but he only took what he needed and was never seen or heard from again.

Here are the first couple of photos.

The Sugar Factory - Revisit

I am sorry for being a little negligent with my blog, but about a week ago I was offered the chance to participate in an exhibition and so I spent the last couple of days in an abandoned hospital to take photos.
But I am almost done with those pictures, so I finally have some time to continue posting.

This industrial ruin was actually the last location on our vacation in July.
We had visited this sugar factory in November of last year but didn't find a way in. So we took another chance this year. We had about 30 minutes on our way back home and we did find a way in.

It was only a short visit, so there's not much to see, but who knows...maybe we will return...

Castle Hedera

Of course, this is not the real name of this castle.
But the massive growth of ivy on its walls made for a good name that also nicely conceals the real name and therefore also the location.
The town itself dates back to the 11th century when a local nobleman built the first house and courtyard as the ancestral seat for his family.
A descendant of this family built the castle in the 19th century.
The first construction phase on the red brick mansion was finished in 1859.
In 1877, it was expanded with a side wing, a portal and a large terrace.

The family lived in the castle until the end of World War II.
The castle was confiscated by the British occupying force and later used to accomodate expellees.
After that, the mansion was used as a lung sanatorium.
Until 1986, the castle served as rehabilitation facility for mentally and physically handicapped children.
Since 1987, the building stands deserted and decays just like the surrounding area.

It wasn't easy to get on the premises, the village is pretty busy and there are lots of cars going by. The mansion itself is in a desolate state. The upper floors are collapsing on the lower ones and it really didn't look safe to enter, so we just went around and took a couple of outside shots.

Order of St. John - The Sanatorium in the Mountains Revisited (Part 3)

Here are the last couple of pictures from our revisit of the old sanatorium. I am sure that this was not our last visit there.
I definitely would like to take some night shots in this place :)

Order of St. John - The Sanatorium in the Mountains Revisited

On our way back from the medieval castle we decided to pay a quick visit to the abandoned St. John's Sanatorium.
We drove op there, honked the horn and Jens - the caretaker who I mentioned in the report about our first visit - showed up and let us in.
We had a nice talk with him and were given the chance to say hi to a bunch of his beautiful Greenland dogs before we started walking through the sanatorium.
It was like visiting an old friend, it felt strangely familiar.
But it was amazing to see what wind and weather can do to a building in less than a year.

Some of the photos may seem familiar to you. That's because I tried to remember some of the shots I took during our last visit and recreate them. So if you're interested, just check out the posts of the first visit and find out what has changed.

Here are the first couple of photos.
